Letterman’s Apology is Pathetic

October 7th, 2009

Since I can’t seem to read anything vaguely showbiz-related lately without coming across David Letterman’s apology, I’m going to have to vent. The American talk-show host decided to go public with details of an attempted blackmail plot against him, by talking about it live on his chat show. A producer was threatening to tell the media about affairs Letterman had been having with female members of his staff unless the host paid the blackmailer a large sum of money. Since the confession, the accused has now been taken to court, and thus ends a nasty attempt at blackmail. And what of Mr Letterman?

Well, by confessing his sins on air, the usually acid-tongued comedian got off lightly. By pleading guilty and begging for forgiveness, whilst interweaving the odd self-deprecating joke into his monologue, the public has actually laughed it off and kind of patted him on the back for it. Plus, ratings for his show have gone up! And all this for a man who is married, with a small child, and was having sexual relationships with younger women who were in their own respective relationships. Does this mean that if there hadn’t been a blackmail attempt against him, Letterman would still be cavorting around with these younger women, despite being married? How must his wife Regina feel, knowing that she only found out because of some money-hungry blackmailer? Is Letterman secretly thinking: ‘Darn it! I could’ve gotten away with this if it wasn’t for him!’ Seriously, it took blackmail for him to realise the error in his ways. Pathetic! America still tunes in daily to find out if he’ll have something else to say about it. Personally, I wish he’d just keep his trap shut and his flies done up. But for those that are less offended by his lack of morals, here’s a clip of the latest grovelling apology: “I didn’t want to talk about it anymore but it seems like people want to talk about it” – Hmm, a likely excuse Letterman – you’re loving the attention really, aren’t you?

Everyone deserves another chance. And this has been acquired anew by this famous man. It's not about the blackmail, its a “miracle” that disguises as blackmailer. His wife was praying sincerely and her prayers were answered. “Let those without sins throw the first stone”. The most important lesson here it to stay morally upright in all your doings and refrain from “stepping on others toe.”

After three years of marriage, Kim was still questioning her husband about his lurid past.

“C'mon, tell me,” she asked for the thousandth time, “how many women have you slept with?”

“Baby,” he protested, “if I told you, you'd throw a fit”.

Kim promised she wouldn't get angry, and convinced her hubby to tell her.

“Okay,” he said, “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven – then there's you – nine, ten, 11, 12, 13..”
