MTV’s Gone Too Far

October 19th, 2009

Ah. Yet another low for reality TV. This time MTV is guilty. Following the (very) recent death of DJ ‘AM’ Adam Goldstein, the channel has decided to screen his reality series ‘Gone Too Far’ in the US this month. The programme follows the DJ as he helped recovering drug and alcohol addicts get through rehab. The series wrapped days after his accidental but fatal overdose of prescription drugs and cocaine. Now, his family has agreed to broadcast the series as a memory of Goldstein’s continued work with addicts; something that had been close to his heart since he became clean 11 years ago. The irony is, however, that the very substance that he is helping people kick in the series is what killed him in the end. And so soon after his death, are we really ready to sit comfortably in front of our TV screens and see him working with addicts when we know how the story of this particular addict ended? Why does everything in media-land have to happen so quickly these days? DJ AM fans need time to grieve.
