Another US Remake Disaster?
Another week, another TV show for America to kill. First it was Shameless, now the US has turned its attention to Australian classics. FX has commissioned a 13-part remake of Aussie comedy Wilfred. The hit series featured Adam Zwar as a socially awkward druggie who, in a constant drug-induced stupor, would see his new girlfriend’s dog, Wilfred, as a human wearing a dog costume. The part of the dog was played by Jason Gann, and he will also star in the remake. Elijah Wood – star of stage and the big screen – will take on Adam’s role for the American version. An unusual choice of lead, coupled with the fact that they’re keeping the original Australian actor in the title role, leads me to believe this simply will not work. Jason will probably still be great, but I’m not convinced he will gel with Elijah and the American sense of humour. If they were going to keep the Aussie actor, why bother remaking the show in the first place? Do Americans just not like anything foreign?! Will the Aussie humour transfer to the States? Watch this clip from the original and decide for yourself:
