Arresting New Drama
Jimmy McGovern – the master of moral dilemma – is back on BBC One, with another series of compelling dramas. Similar to his award-winning series The Street, each episode of Accused will focus on a different character, who has been brought to stand trial for allegedly committing a crime. Rather than focusing on the courtroom process, like many legal dramas, the focus here is very much on the story of how the accused have reached the docks. As we see their back-story unfold, it becomes apparent that their guilt or innocence is not as black and white as it would seem. Will the jury make the right choice? It sounds like Jimmy has another hit series on his hands, if its predecessor is anything to go by. The programme’s success is further cemented by a stellar cast that includes Christopher Eccleston, Mackenzie Crook, Juliet Stevenson, Andy Serkis, Marc Warren and Naomie Harris. With a line-up like that, it’s bound to impress. Accused comes to BBC One at the end of the year.
