Derek Gets Full Series
Ricky Gervais’ new comedy Derek has got a full series commissioned, after the pilot attracted over three million viewers. The half-hour comedy tells the story of care home worker Derek Noakes, played by Ricky himself. The pilot bore striking similarities to Ricky’s hit series The Office. There was a hint of a romance between one of the care home visitors and Derek’s best friend Hannah – very reminiscent of the beginning of Dawn and Tim’s attraction. The tone of the comedy was familiar too: very sentimental and playing on people’s insecurities. But who can blame Ricky for using a tried and tested formula? It worked for him the first time and, judging by the ratings for the pilot, it may well work again. Derek returns to Channel 4 for a six-part series early next year.
