Get Lost in Baker

Chet BakerEven people whose aversion to jazz is as strong as mine will be taken in by this moving documentary about the legendary trumpeter Chet Baker. Let’s Get Lost airs on BBC4 this Saturday as part of the channel’s ongoing Jazz 1959 season. This film has it all – sex, drugs, jazz and a really compelling lead character in Chet Baker, whose story is a fascinating one. A gifted musician, his career was constantly plagued with problems related to his addiction to heroin. It’s heartbreaking to see him in his final years, as the ravages of drugs and hard living made him weak and appear about 30 years older than he actually was. He eventually met his maker in 1988, after falling from a hotel balcony. Famed black-and-white photographer and director, Bruce Weber, portrays Baker with honesty and affection in this extraordinary film.
