Endemol Fires Up Crunchtime TV
Reality TV has stooped to a new low for me. Endemol (producer of Big Brother) has announced that it is making a reality show for the credit crunch. So…finding jobs for the unemployed, maybe? Helping those on the dole with their bills? Paying off someone’s mortgage? Nope, quite the opposite. In ‘Someone’s Gotta Go’, employees of a real company are given the task of firing one employee each week, and giving another a pay cut. Oh, lovely. Not a made-up company, mind you – a real company, with real staff, and real mortgages, and real families…what has reality TV come to?! Apparently, the employees will be given information on the struggling company’s budget, as well as a report on each employee’s performance. Then, they will have to make a decision and inform the poor, unlucky soul that they are losing their job. It’s a bit like The Apprentice, but produced by sadistic, moronic TV execs who clearly don’t have to worry about their own financial situations and think it’s actually entertaining to watch others lose their jobs. Is this like a really late April Fool’s joke? Please, someone say yes! Thankfully, this is only broadcasting on Fox in the US at the moment. Let’s hope us Brits see fit to give it a miss.
