Gervais Gives Idiot Acting Role
Ricky Gervais has cast An Idiot Abroad star Karl Pilkington in his new comedy project, Derek. The radio producer and reluctant travel show presenter briefly tried his hand at acting by making a short appearance in Ricky’s 2010 film Cemetry Junction. He will now star as Ricky’s employer, Dougie, in the new Channel 4 comedy. At this stage, Derek is a one-off pilot. It follows the life of care home worker Derek Noakes. Ricky plays the lead role himself and debuted the character at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2001. Derek is described as ‘a tender, innocent man who loves animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, Deal or No Deal, Million Pound Drop and Britain’s Got Talent’. But his main interest is autograph collecting. Sir Sean Connery is believed to be making a guest appearance in the first episode, due to air next month.
