Modern Family Buckles Under Pressure
The new series of Modern Family continues tomorrow on Sky1. The comedy has just picked up five Emmy awards, so I expected big laughs from the first episode of the third series. Was I the only one that was disappointed?
The extended Pritchett-Dunphy clan travelled to a ‘dude ranch’ in Wyoming for the season opener, to learn about how cowboys live. It was a sure-fire recipe for success. Usually, when the family does trips, they involve much chaos and hilarity. Remember baby Lily being left in the lift in Hawaii? Modern Family gold! But, instead of the usual laugh-out-loud moments, the first episode was full of what seemed like forced jokes and over-acting.
Yes, the dude ranch guy fancied Gloria – PREDICTABLE. Phil felt under-appreciated by Jay – PREDICTABLE. Mitchell and Cameron discussed adopting a boy but Mitchell felt he wasn’t manly enough to bring up a son. WTF?! He then feels better when he and Luke let off a firecracker in a bird house. Umm…riiight…Claire loathed Hayley’s boyfriend Dylan – who went from being annoying to even more annoying but then had randomly dumped Hayley by the end of the episode. And Alex got her first kiss from some smarmy Super Mario boy who looked like a mobster version of Manny! What happened guys?!
Were the writers just trying too hard to live up to the hype? Was the pressure to recreate another hilarious vacation too much? Thank goodness Sky1 aired a double bill for the series premiere. Just as I was losing faith in my favourite comedy, the second episode came along, straight after the disappointing first one, and it was back to the old Modern Family jokes. The awkwardness, the bumbling, the squabbling…it was all back! Phew! And Lily is older and already hinting at being trouble. I love it. Let’s hope tomorrow night continues in the same vein so we can forget all about that horrendous first episode. What happened in Wyoming, stays in Wyoming.
The third series of Modern Family continues on Sky1 on Fridays at 8pm.
