Scott & Bailey Returns

Scott & Bailey on ITV1

Scott & Bailey on ITV1

ITV’s ratings-busting detective series Scott & Bailey is back next week. The opening episode, the first installment of a two-parter, dives straight into a new murder case. Once again M.I.T. crack on with finding answers, with their familiar female-skewed view on proceedings.

As usual, the duo’s personal lives take centre stage, despite the chaos of their work lives. Bailey (Suranne Jones) once again shows her naive but caring side when she takes in her younger brother – a tearaway that’s carrying a conviction for armed robbery. He’s not exactly an ideal housemate for a detective and it’s clear his presence and past connections will haunt Bailey in episodes to come. There are also hints of a romance with colleague Kevin until the introduction of a new police officer – a face from Bailey’s past – played by Sean Maguire.

Meanwhile, having recovered from a stabbing in the last series, Scott (Lesley Sharp) is back to work. But family life is still strained despite her decision not to leave her husband in favour of colleague Andy. This series also sees DCI Gill Murray (Amelia Bullmore) getting more screen time, a move that is more than welcome, in my opinion, as she provides a lot of the laughs.

Fans of the show will be glad to know the comedy element and banter between the ladies at M.I.T. is as present as ever. Although the focus is on the case at hand, we also see how the detectives juggle their professional and personal lives. Most of the time, they are stoic and soldier on despite drama from all corners, but sometimes it all gets too much. But that’s what sets this series apart from other detective shows; it’s what makes these two ladies so likeable. Judging by the first episode of the new series, we’re in for more Scott & Bailey gold.

Scott & Bailey returns to ITV1 on Monday March 12th at 9pm.
