Vuvuzela: Buzz Word of the Week
What’s more annoying than seeing your favourite team in the World Cup do badly? Having to watch it all with an ever-present droning noise from the vuvuzelas in the background. The plastic horns seem to be popular amongst the South African audience, but us viewers have had enough. 545 people have complained to the BBC alone about the irritating noise during matches. FIFA has said that they will not be banning them in the crowds for the time being but is ‘evaluating the situation on an ongoing basis’. Meanwhile, the BBC is looking into a red-button option that will allow the viewer to watch coverage with the horn sound cut out. Don’t get too excited yet though, it is still being developed and may result in other crowd noise and commentary being affected. Let’s hope ITV can follow suit and at least look into the situation for their live coverage as well.
